26 Apr Volunteers Help Us Grow
In recognition of national Volunteer Appreciation Week, we are highlighting our volunteers who make things happen at FCS.
Community Programs and Board of Directors
There are so many community programs here at FCS it is hard to list them all. From Thanksgiving to Freeze Out and everything in between (Holiday Helpline, Community Day, Read to Succeed, Summer Lunch, Fall Festival and more), it takes HUNDREDS of volunteers to support these programs.
None of our community programs would be possible without the oversight from our Board of Directors. The FCS Board is comprised of 17 members who volunteer their time and expertise to ensure FCS operates smoothly. The Board may work “behind the scenes,” but their volunteer time is invaluable.
Whether you volunteer to help at FCS once a year, once a month, or once a week, we appreciate all you do to support your community.
Thrift Shop
There’s a reason our Thrift Shop is a sought-after thrifting destination in Maine – it’s because our Thrift Shop volunteer team works to ensure a positive customer experience every day.
From accepting donations on the loading dock, to merchandising and running the register, our Thrift Shop volunteers give approximately 350 hours per month, in support of the FCS mission. All proceeds from the Thrift Shop stay at FCS, supporting our community programs.
It takes a team of 40 volunteers to keep our little shop humming and we love them all. The Thrift Shop simply wouldn’t exist without our volunteers!
Backpack Program and Free Friday Lunch
It’s no secret that food brings people together.
We are happy to be back to in-person Friday Lunch on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month. Of course, Friday Lunch wouldn’t be possible without talented chefs in the kitchen, friendly servers and a dedicated clean-up crew. Over 20 people help prepare and serve lunch for over 70 people twice a month – volunteer service that is both fun and filling (because there are always leftovers!). Thanks to all our volunteers who help bring people together for Friday Lunch.
Another way we share connection through food is with our Backpack Program, which delivers supplemental snack foods to kids each week at school. It takes a team of 10 volunteers to pack and distribute over 60 bags each week – that’s over 2000 bags throughout the school year. Just like clockwork, the Backpack volunteers make it happen!
Transportation & Age-Friendly
Our dedicated team of 25 volunteer drivers provide much needed transportation for people in the community. From short trips to the grocery store to essential medical appointments – our transportation volunteers are truly “neighbors helping neighbors.”
Age-Friendly Freeport & Pownal volunteers help to build a supportive community for those who want to age in place.
Thanks for all you do for everyone in your community!
Food Pantry
Each month, 45 (or more!) volunteers give approximately 350 hours of service in our Food Pantry. With the help of our volunteers, we provide weekly food essentials to between 80 – 100 households in Freeport and Pownal.
Thanks for all you do to support your community!
