We are now a 1% for the Planet environmental partner

Freeport Community Services is proud to announce that we are now a certified environmental partner of 1% for the Planet!

Businesses and individual members of 1% for the Planet donate directly to the environmental partners of their choice, and FCS is now a new option for those wishing to support our work toward building a more resilient and sustainable Freeport and Pownal.

Freeport Community Services is active in the following areas:

• food waste reduction
• food security
• local food systems
• poverty alleviation
• social justice
• recycling
• textiles
• responsible consumption

We provide critical resources to neighbors in need while creating many environmental benefits. Through our Food Pantry, we help eliminate food waste. Through our Thrift Shop, we repurpose clothing and household items so they don’t end up in landfills.

On average, our Food Pantry provides nutritious food to around 200 households and over 400 individuals. Annually, over 140,000 pounds of food is rescued from our local stores and provided to those in need. What food is not consumed through the pantry is given to local farmers who feed it to their livestock, resulting in zero waste.

Weekly, our Thrift Shop receives on average and incredible 860 cubic feet, or three tons, of donations. The shop sells around 2,600 items every week, and to bring it full circle, proceeds from the sales fund our essential programs!

When our neighbors shop in our Thrift Shop, they are helping make our community a healthier, more sustainable place to live for everyone.

We are so pleased that these efforts have been recognized by 1% for the Planet, a global organization that helps inspire businesses to support environmental partners.

The certification of Freeport Community Services by 1% for the Planet will also help put the spotlight on the many environmentally-focused things we do as part of our regular programming.
